Ukraine – Higher League Round 9: #1 Azovmash is defeated by Dnipro-2

Kirilo Zuev There was no lack of interesting games this round. The round ended with defeat of the leader and favorites losing the games.The most surprising game was a loss of top-ranked Azovmash (8-2) in Dnepropetrovsk on Sunday night. Visitors were defeated by fifth ranked Dnipro-2 (4-6) 80-63. The game without a history. Dnipro-2 led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They made 19-of-22 free shots (86.4 percent) during the game. Dnipro-2 forced 26 Azovmash turnovers. Guard Yusuf Sanon (190-99) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 28 points and 13 rebounds for the winners and guard Artem Lushan (195-97) chipped in 25 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. The best for the losing side was guard Kirilo Zuev (193-93) with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Azovmash’s coach Sergei Zavalin rotated eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Dnipro-2 moved-up to fourth place. Azovmash at the other side still keeps top position with two games lost. Dnipro-2 will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Azovmash will play at home against SumDU and is hoping to win this game. The game between Top Four teams took place in Kryvyi Rih. Third ranked host Krivbas-2 (6-2) smashed second-best Zolotoi Vek (5-3) 90-63. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Zolotoi Vek. It was a key game for the second position in the league. Guard Evgeni Sergeychik (185-94) nailed 34 points (!!!), 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals for the winning side and Artem Vodolaztcky accounted for 18 points and 10 rebounds. Power forward Andriy Kulish (205-92) came up with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 12 rebounds for Zolotoi Vek in the defeat. Krivbas-2 moved-up to second place. Zolotoi Vek at the other side dropped to the third position with three games lost. They share it with Ternopil-TNEU. Krivbas-2 will play against Kremen-2 (#7) in Kremenchuk in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Zolotoi Vek will play at home against Niko-Basket (#5) and it may be a tough game between close rivals. The game between Top Four teams took place in Frankivsk. First ranked host Hoverla (8-1) defeated second-best Khimik-2 (6-3) 85-69. The best player for the winners was Sergiy Yurchenko who had a double-double by scoring 12 points and 14 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was Kyrylo Marchenko who recorded 14 points and 7 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Hoverla have an impressive series of eight victories in a row. They maintain first place with 8-1 record. Loser Khimik-2 keeps the second position with three games lost. Hoverla will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Khimik-2 will play against KPZO DYUSH and hope to secure a win. It was a good game for Andriy Kulish who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 32 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. Krivbas-2’s coach Oleksandr Porokhenko tested ten players in this game, but that didn’t help. The victory was the fifth consecutive win for Zolotoi Vek. Despite that victory Zolotoi Vek went down to third position due to points difference, which they share with Ternopil-TNEU. Krivbas-2 at the other side dropped to the second place with two games lost. Zolotoi Vek’s next round opponent will be Niko-Basket (#5) in Mykolaiv. Krivbas-2 will play on the road against Kremen-2 in Kremenchuk and hope to win that game. Higher League top team – Azovmash (8-2) added another victory to their record on Saturday. This time they beat fifth ranked Dnipro-2 (4-6) in Dnepropetrovsk 78-70. Kirilo Zuev stepped up with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 16 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Newly promoted Dnipro-2 dropped to the fourth position with six games lost. Azovmash will face SumDU (#6) in Sumy in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Kremen-2 outrebounded SumDU 59-32 including a 24-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. Forward Ivan Shapoval (197-97) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 28 points and 16 rebounds for the winners and the former international forward Viktor Kobzisty (200-79) chipped in 18 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists.
