Belarus – Premier League Round 8: Vitebsk defeats BSEU-GrandPrint in the closest game of the week

AntonVashkevich The most exciting game of round 8 in the Premier League took place in Minsk. This derby game ended with only two-point home defeat of 5th ranked BSEU-GrandPrint (2-4) to fourth ranked Vitebsk (4-4) 87-85 in the game for the fourth place. BSEU-GrandPrint was trailing by 4 points at halftime but managed to get 1-point lead after three quarters before a 25-22 charge of Vitebsk, which allowed them to win the game. They made 16-of-19 free shots (84.2 percent) during the game. Worth to mention a great performance of power forward Anton Vashkevich (204-94) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 16 points and 16 rebounds and point guard Ivan Aladko (192-95) who added 20 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists during the contest. Power forward Vitaliy Lebedev (200-99) responded with a double-double by scoring 30 points and 12 rebounds (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!). BSEU-GrandPrint’s coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn’t help. Vitebsk have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain fourth position with 4-4 record. BSEU-GrandPrint at the other side keeps the fifth place with four games lost. They share the position with Impuls BGUIR. Vitebsk are looking forward to face league’s second-placed Grodno-93 on the road in the next round and it may be the game of the week. BSEU-GrandPrint will play against the league’s leader COR-Borisfen and is hoping to prove to their fans that this time they can win. GOCOR-Sozh has finally registered their first victory this season after five consecutive losses. They used home court advantage to defeat Brest (1-7) 71-59. The winners were led by point guard Tsimafei Viaroukin (187-93) who scored that evening 33 points (!!!), 8 rebounds and 4 assists and Aleksandr Kopacev supported him with 13 points and 6 rebounds. Even a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds by forward Dmitriy Dmitruk (198-81) did not help to save the game for Brest. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. It was the only win of host team this round and in all other games visitors recorded victories. GOCOR-Sozh (1-5) left bottom position moving up to eighth place. Newly promoted Brest dropped to the bottom position with seven games lost. GOCOR-Sozh will play against higher ranked Tsmoki II (#3) in Minsk in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Brest will have a break next round. Brest has finally registered their first victory this season after seven consecutive losses. The win is especially important as it came on the road game in Gomel, where they defeated GOCOR-Sozh (1-5) 84-72 on Friday. The best player for the winners was Dmitriy Dmitruk who had a double-double by scoring 19 points, 22 rebounds and 6 assists. Aleksandr Kopacev produced 8 points and 17 rebounds for the hosts. Despite that victory Brest went down to ninth position due to points difference. It was GOCOR-Sozh’s fifth loss in a row. They dropped to the eighth place with five games lost. Brest will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. GOCOR-Sozh will play against Tsmoki II (#3) in Minsk and hope to win that game. The game in Minsk was also worth to mention about. Fourth ranked Vitebsk (4-4) played at the court of 5th ranked BSEU-GrandPrint (2-4). Vitebsk did not have too big problems and got a relatively easy victory 101-84. Ivan Aladko orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 17 points, 8 rebounds and 11 assists. BSEU-GrandPrint’s coach tested eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Vitebsk have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain fourth position with 4-4 record.
