‘Miles2Miami’ … Talladega

The road to Ford Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway now takes the 12 remaining title contenders to Talladega Superspeedway this week, with 1,576.08 “Miles2Miami” remaining in the 2016 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
Sunday’s Hellmann’s 500 is the final race in the Round of 12. When the checkered flag falls, four more drivers will be dropped from title contention – with the eight remaining competitors advancing to the next round that opens Oct. 30 at Martinsville Speedway.
Though still winless in this year’s post-season, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Carl Edwards is among those drivers who seem to be relatively safe in terms of moving on. He’s fourth in the Chase standings, 24 points clear of the eighth-place cutoff.
“Everyone knows how tough Talladega can be and what it can do to your championship hopes,” said Edwards, still seeking his first Cup Series win on the sprawling 2.66-mile Alabama oval. …
