Crash Collects Chase Contenders

A multi-car crash on a lap 259 restart in Sunday’s Bank of America 500 swept up some of the Chase contenders.
Austin Dillon and Chase Elliott were the Chase drivers that had their cars heavily damaged in the 12-car accident and exited the race with finishes of 32nd and 33rd, respectively.
After taking two tires, Dillon led the inside line to the green when Martin Truex Jr. got into the back of Dillon to trigger the accident.
“I want to say that I’m sorry to Austin Dillon, the 3 team, Slugger (Labbe, crew chief) and all those guys,” Truex said after finishing 13th in the race. I know they’re working hard and they certainly didn’t need me to turn them around on that restart. I feel terrible about that. I was just trying to help get him going and just pushed way too hard so I just want to apologize to those guys and hopefully I can talk to Austin …
