Iceland – Dominos League Round 1: Stjarnan defeats Thor AK

HlynurBaeringsson The Regular Season in Dominos League just started. The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of Thor AK (0-1) in Akureyri on Friday night. Hosts were defeated by Stjarnan (1-0) 91-82. The guests started the game with a very strong first quarter 28-16. But Thor AK won second period 24-19. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Stjarnan looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of the former international power forward Hlynur Baeringsson (200-82) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 15 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists. The former international point guard Justin Shouse (181-81, college: Mercyhurst) contributed with 20 points and 8 assists for the winners. Stjarnan’s coach Hrafn Kristjansson used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The former international guard Darrel Lewis (192-76, college: Lincoln, MO) answered with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 10 rebounds for Thor AK. Stjarnan is looking forward to face IR (#3) in Reykjavik in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Thor AK will play on the road against Tindastoll (#12) in Sauoarkrokur and is hoping to prove to their supporters that the loss was just an accident. Another exciting game for Keflavik (1-0) which played on the court of Njardvik (0-1). Keflavik won 88-82. American forward Amin Stevens (203-90, college: Florida A&M) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 33 points (!!!) and 21 rebounds for the winners and Hordur Vilhjalmsson chipped in 16 points and 6 assists. At the losing side American forward Corbin Jackson (198, college: Florida Tech) responded with 21 points and 4 assists (on 10-of-12 shooting from the field). Keflavik will play against Thor Thorl (#11) in Thorlakshofn in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Njardvik will play on the road against Snaefell (#9) in Stykkisholmur and it may be a tough game between close rivals. A very close game took place in Grindavik between Grindavik and Thor Thorl. Grindavik (1-0) got a very close home victory over Thor Thorl (0-1). Grindavik managed to escape with a 2-point win 73-71 on Thursday evening. Host team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. Lewis Clinch nailed 37 points (!!!) for the winning side. Tobin Carberry came up with 23 points and 7 rebounds for Thor Thorl in the defeat. Thor Thorl’s coach Einar Johannsson rotated ten players in this game, but that didn’t help. Grindavik will meet at home Haukar in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Thor Thorl will play against Keflavik (#4) and hope to win that game. The game between IR (1-0) and Snaefell (0-1) in Reykjavik ended with biggest points difference. IR outscored guests from Stykkisholmur 96-65. Matthew Hunter fired 30 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals for the winners. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. IR’s next round opponent will be Stjarnan (#6) on the road which should be theoretically another easy game. Snaefell will play against Njardvik and it may be a tough game between close rivals. In the last two games of round 1 winless Tindastoll lost to undefeated KR on the road 78-98. Haukar won against Skallagrimur on its own court 80-70.
