Lithuania – LKL Round 4: Vytautas lose to Zalgiris

Augusto Lima This is still too early stage of the Regular Season in LKL and we should expect many changes in upcoming rounds. The most important game in the last round took place in Kaunas between third ranked Vytautas (2-2) and fourth ranked Zalgiris (3-1) on Sunday night. Vytautas was defeated by Zalgiris on the road 66-79. It was a key game for the second position in the league. The game was mostly controlled by Zalgiris. Vytautas managed to win fourth quarter 19-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They made 16-of-20 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. Zalgiris outrebounded Vytautas 42-24 including 29 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of Brazilian center Augusto Lima (207-91) who helped to win the game recording 12 points and 9 rebounds (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). Paulius Jankunas (205-84) contributed with 12 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Center Mindaugas Kupsas (217-91, agency: Octagon Europe) replied with 14 points for Vytautas. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Zalgiris have a solid three-game winning streak. Defending champion moved-up to second place, which they share with Lietkabelis. Vytautas at the other side dropped to the fourth position with two games lost. They share it with Nevezis and P.Zvaigzdes. Zalgiris is looking forward to face P.Zvaigzdes (#5) in Pasvalys in the next round. Vytautas will play at home against the league’s leader Lietuvos rytas and is hoping to win this game. LKL top team – Lietuvos rytas (4-0) had no problems winning another game. This time they crushed seventh ranked Dzukija (1-2) in Alytus 79-59. Worth to mention a quality performance of American-Polish guard David Logan (185-82, college: Indianapolis) who helped to win the game recording 15 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists and Deividas Gailius who added 16 points and 6 rebounds during the contest. At the losing side center Karolis Guscikas (205-92, agency: Octagon Europe) responded with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Lietuvos rytas have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 4-0 record. Dzukija at the other side keeps the seventh place with two games lost. They share the position with Juventus. Lietuvos rytas will play against Vytautas (#6) in Prienai in the next round where they are favorite. Dzukija will play on the road against Nevezis in Kedainiai to get more than just one victory in their record. Bottom-ranked Siauliai is still unable to win any game. This time they lost on the road their third consecutive match to eighth ranked P.Zvaigzdes (2-2) 71-59 on Saturday evening. The winners were led by Derrick Low who scored that evening 7 points, 13 assists and 5 steals. Even 14 points and 7 rebounds by Asenso Ampim did not help to save the game for Siauliai. P.Zvaigzdes moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Nevezis and Vytautas. Loser Siauliai still closes the standings with three games lost. They share the position with Neptunas. P.Zvaigzdes will meet at home higher ranked Zalgiris (#3) in the next round and it may be the game of the week. Siauliai will play against Juventus (#8) in Utena and hopes to get finally their first victory.Bottom-ranked Neptunas is still unable to win any game. This time they lost on the road their third consecutive match to seventh ranked Nevezis (2-2) 94-90. Justas Sinica fired 26 points for the winners. Nevezis moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Vytautas and P.Zvaigzdes. Neptunas at the other side still closes the standings with three games lost. Nevezis’ next round opponent will be Dzukija (#7) in Alytus. Neptunas will play on the road against the league’s second-placed Lietkabelis in Panevezys and looks forward to get finally their first victory.The game in Utena was also quite interesting. Second ranked Lietkabelis (3-1) played at the court of 7th ranked Juventus (1-2). Lietkabelis managed to secure a 9-point victory 85-76 on Sunday. It was a very good performance for Lorenzo Williams who helped to win the game recording 19 points and 5 assists (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Lietkabelis maintains second position with 3-1 record behind leader Lietuvos rytas, which they share with Zalgiris. Loser Juventus keeps the seventh place with two games lost. Lietkabelis will face Neptunas (#9) in Klaipeda in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Juventus will play at home against Siauliai and hope to win that …
