Kluber awaiting MRI results after hurting groin

DETROIT — Corey Kluber stood off to the side in the visitors’ clubhouse at Comerica Park, goggles on and soaked in champagne. The Indians’ ace has watched his team overcome an assortment of obstacles this season, but none stopped Cleveland from capturing an American League Central title.

In the Tribe’s division-clinching 7-4 win over the Tigers on Monday night, the latest hurdle involved Kluber. The leader of the Indians’ rotation exited after four innings as a precaution due to tightness in his right groin, and he headed to Cleveland on Tuesday to undergo an MRI exam to determine the extent of the injury.

“He got scanned today,” Indians manager Terry Francona said prior to Tuesday’s game in Detroit. “He’s actually on his way back here now. He was a little stiff, but not overly tender, so I think that gives you some reason to be optimistic.” That said, the Indians were still awaiting the results of the tests Kluber underwent, meaning an update on the pitcher’s condition may not be available until Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

“We’ll share the information when it’s available,” Francona said. “I don’t think it makes any sense to start guessing.” As Kluber watched the party rage on Monday, he declined to discuss the injury.
