Atletico v Bayern Munich preview
- Updated: September 27, 2016
Bayern Munich will look to make it nine straight wins on Wednesday, but won’t have faced tougher opponents during that run than their Champions League hosts Atletico Madrid.
Atletico have reached the final of Europe’s elite competition in two of the last three seasons, losing on both occasions to Real Madrid, and Diego Simeone’s team are strong favourites to progress from Group D along with current table-toppers Bayern.
“Atletico are certainly our toughest opponents in the group,” Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said on Tuesday. “They’re a top European team and one of the strongest teams in the Champions League.
“We’ve not had very good results against Spanish teams in Spain over the last three years. We’ll at least try and avoid defeat tomorrow.”
Bayern recorded a convincing 5-0 win over FC Rostov in the opening round of matches, while Atletico edged past PSV Eindhoven 1-0.
