France – NM1 Round 2 of Regular Season

GiedriusStaniulis There were only 2 rounds played so far and it’s still very beginning of the Regular Season in NM1. The fans could enjoy quite many interesting games in the last round. The round ended with change at the leadership position, favorites losing the games and games ending by tiny margin.First defeat of league’s leader Caen (1-1) against Souffelweyersheim (2-0) 74-58 was the most important game of the last round. The hosts trailed by 5 points at the halftime before their 41-20 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Souffelweyersheim outrebounded Caen 42-25 including 28 on the defensive glass. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Souffelweyersheim made 7 blocks. Lithuanian power forward Giedrius Staniulis (205-91) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 15 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks (perfect from the field making all seven shots !!!). American point guard Fabyon Harris (180-91, college: Texas A&M) contributed with 24 points for the winners. Souffelweyersheim’s coach Stephane Eberlin used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Serbian power forward Darko Cohadarevic (205-86, college: Texas Tech, agency: Octagon Europe) replied with 12 points and 8 rebounds for Caen. Quimper UJAP defeated Lorient at home 79-69. Kevin Mondesir (204-91) had a double-double by scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and Vyacheslav Bobrov chipped in 7 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists during the contest. Quimper UJAP’s coach Laurent Foirest allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Naturalized Central African guard Destin Damachoua (184-86, college: New Orleans) responded with 19 points. Lorient will play next round against Vendee Challans trying to get back on the winning streak. Quimper UJAP will try to continue on its current victory against CFBB at Paris. The most crucial game of the last round was a loss of Saint Vallier (1-1) on the court of Vitre on Saturday night. Visitors were defeated by Vitre 78-74. Guillaume Merie notched 15 points and 7 rebounds to lead the effort. Even 31 points by Omar Strong did not help to save the game for Saint Vallier. Vitre will meet Union Rennes (#15) on the road in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Saint Vallier will play against Angers BC (#16) and hope to win that game. Very important is a road loss of UB Chartres (1-1) against ALS Basket (1-1) on Saturday night. Visiting UB Chartres was defeated by ALS Basket in a tough game in Andrezieux 66-75. The best player for the winners was Jerrold Brooks who scored 21 points and 5 assists. ALS Basket’s next round opponent will be SAP Vaucluse (#10) in Sorgues where they are favorite. UB Chartres will play at home against Souffelweyersheim (#2) and it may be a tough game between close rivals. Very important is a road loss of Gries/Oberhoffen (1-1) against Lourdes-Tarbes (1-1) on Friday night. Visiting Gries/Oberhoffen was edged by Lourdes-Tarbes in a tough game in Tarbes 86-89. Xane d’Almeida orchestrated the victory by scoring 27 points and 8 assists. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Lourdes-Tarbes will face Caen (#5) on the road in the next round.
