NASCAR Notebook: Laser Inspection In Spotlight

NASCAR’s post-race laser inspection process continues to generate attention in the Sprint Cup Series.
Last weekend’s Chicagoland Speedway race winner, Martin Truex Jr., and 12th-place finisher Jimmie Johnson both had their cars fail post-race inspection following the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400. But neither violation rose to the level of what NASCAR coined an “encumbered” finish that would warrant stricter punishment.
The process of using laser inspection after races is a necessary evil according to NASCAR officials, in order to keep the sport on a level playing field, and one that teams asked to be put in place.
