Rotation flipped; Montgomery to start vs. Crew

ST. LOUIS — Left-hander Mike Montgomery is scheduled to stay in the rotation for now and open the homestand against the Brewers on Thursday. He’ll be followed by right-handers John Lackey, Jake Arrieta and Kyle Hendricks.
Thursday would be Montgomery’s fifth start for the Cubs; he has a no-decision and a 3.93 ERA, giving up eight earned runs over 18 1/3 innings. In his last start, on Sept. 7 against the Brewers, he gave up one earned run on two hits over five innings, striking out six.
The Cubs decided to flip Montgomery and Lester so that Lester will close the series against the Cardinals on Wednesday. General manager Jed Hoyer said on Monday that the move had nothing to do with lining up the pitchers for the postseason.
