The regular season finale at Richmond International Raceway got off to a tremendous start when the Chase format was first introduced back in 2004. Jeremy Mayfield pulled out all the stops for a dramatic win that night to earn a spot in the new championship format. Recent years haven’t provided as much drama as that September night. But although this year’s edition of the Federated Auto Parts 400 didn’t have as much on the line in the Chase story as years past, it delivered in terms of action. It was a wild night in Richmond to say the least before Denny Hamlin was finally able to outrun the field on a final restart in overtime to lock down his third win of the season. It took a while to get there, thanks to a record 16 cautions as well as a red flag, but the Virginia native’s win was a popular one with the hometown crowd. However, all of that is literally in the rear view mirror as 16 drivers set their sights on the 10 races that lie ahead in the championship portion of the season. Richmond was a satisfying appetizer to the main course that begins next week in Chicago.
