PITTSBURGH — Nine innings after matching one National League home run record, the Cardinals set a Major League mark in a 9-7 victory over the Pirates.
One strike away from dropping a game to the Pirates on Tuesday, the Cardinals evened it with one Matt Carpenter swing. Carpenter came off the bench and belted an 0-2 sinker into the right-center-field stands. It would be the first of three home runs the Cardinals would hit in a four-batter span off Pirates closer Tony Watson, and it put the 2016 Cardinals in the record books.
