Moncada joining Red Sox for stretch run

BOSTON — The Red Sox’s solution to the lack of production from their third basemen this season is just around the corner.

The Red Sox are calling up MLBPipeline.com’s No. 1 prospect, Yoan Moncada, on Friday, the club announced Wednesday night in a move that was suggested by manager John Farrell earlier in the day.

Boston’s skipper directly compared the Double-A Portland star to the team’s addition of Dustin Pedroia (2006), Jacoby Ellsbury (’07) and Xander Bogaerts (’13).

“I think for those that have been around this team for a number of years, the teams that have had success have always had an injection of young players late in the season that have helped carry the team through the postseason,” Farrell said.

Moncada has recently just started playing third base. Normally a second baseman, he has played only nine games at the hot corner this season for the Sea Dogs.

Moncada is slashing .285/.388/.547 with 11 homers and 27 RBIs in 44 games at Portland. Moncada would not only add power to an already aggressive Red Sox lineup, but he could solve the slow production of Travis Shaw and …
