Wilbek steps down as Danish sports director

After four years in the job as sports director in the Danish Handball Federation, Ulrik Wilbek is stepping down with immediate effect as a consequence of turbulence surrounding him during the recent Olympic tournament in Rio.
On the surface, the Olympics were a great success for Denmark, who won their first Olympic gold medal in men’s handball, but reports speculating on the relationship between Wilbek and national coach Gudmundur Gudmundsson have led to Wilbek leaving his job as sports director.
“After an Olympic tournament, where it was my experience that coaches, players and staff found a constructive cooperation, the last days of turbulence in the media have made it impossible for me to see myself continuing in the job,” Ulrik Wilbek says in a statement from the Danish Handball Federation.
