Players of the Week
Player – SS Grenny Cumana, Lakewood… The 20-year-old batted .476 (10-21) with a double, two RBI, a stolen base and five runs scored in six games. He registered three consecutive multi-hit games, during which he recorded his fourth four-hit game of the season. Cumana’s .294 average ranks seventh in the South Atlantic League, and he is the hardest player in the league to strikeout, averaging just one every 12.45 at-bats. The Venezuela native was signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent on March 10, 2013.
Pitcher – RHP Alberto Tirado, Lakewood… Tirado, 21, made one start, holding Greensboro to one run on three hits in 5.0 innings while striking out a career-high 11 batters. He has struck out nine batters or more in four of his last five starts. Since becoming a starter on June 28, Tirado has posted a 6-1 record, 2.47 ERA (13 ER, 47.1 IP) and has struck out 73 batters. He has not allowed more than two earned runs in any of his 10 starts with Lakewood. Tirado was acquired from Toronto along with right-hander Jimmy Cordero in exchange for outfielder Ben Revere on July 31, 2015.
Lehigh Valley IronPigs – International League North Division…80-55, 2nd place… Lehigh Valley went 4-3 last week, winning three of their final four games. They hold a 4.5-game lead in the wild card standings and the second-best record in the International League.
Top hitting performers – 1B/OF Darin Ruf batted .400 (12-30) with two doubles, two home runs, six RBI, two walks, eight runs and a 1.121 OPS in seven games… 1B Brock Stassi doubled twice, homered, drove in five runs and walked five times while batting .333 (8-24)… 2B Jesmuel Valentin batted .353 (6-17) with two home runs, five RBI and four walks.
Top pitching performers – RHP Ben Lively made two starts, posting a 0.82 ERA (1 ER, 11 IP). He allowed three total hits, one walk and struck out eight batters… RHP Phil Klein struck out seven batters in 7.2 innings of one-run ball on August 25. He has a 1.72 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 52.1 innings with Lehigh Valley… LHP Joely Rodriguez appeared in three games, tossing 5.2 scoreless innings with one hit, no walks and four strikeouts.
Reading Fightin Phils – Eastern League Eastern Division …84-49, 1st place… Despite losing five of their seven games, the Fightins were able to clinch a playoff berth and are 1.5 games ahead of the Trenton Thunder for the top spot in both the division and league. Reading also had OF Dylan Cozens and 1B Rhys Hoskins named to the Eastern League postseason All-Star Team.
Top hitting performers – CF Roman Quinn went 5-for-17 (.294) with a double, two home runs, three RBI, two walks and four runs scored… 2B Scott Kingery batted .304 (7-23) in six games with a double, RBI and stolen base… OF Andrew Pullin collected seven hits in 18 at-bats (.389), doubled, walked twice …
