Shortstop Gleyber Torres and left-hander Justus Sheffield, two of the New York Yankees’ key prospect acquisitions from the non-waiver Trade Deadline, have made strong impressions as teammates on Class A Advanced Tampa. On Sunday, the duo paced their new club to an 8-2 victory over Brevard County, with Torres leading the offense with four hits and Sheffield tossing five scoreless innings.
Making his fifth start for Tampa after coming over from the Indians along with Clint Frazier (Yankees’ No. 1) as part of the Andrew Miller trade, Sheffield, the Yankees’ No. 7 prospect, tossed three hitless frames before yielding a knock to begin the fourth. It was the only hit allowed in five innings by the No. 87 overall prospect, who walked three and struck out five while throwing 53 of his 86 pitches for strikes.
Since joining Tampa, Sheffield has pitched to a 1.73 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 26 innings. All together, the 20-year-old lefty is 10-6 with a 3.19 ERA in 24 starts between the Indians’ and Yankees’ Class A Advanced affiliates.
As for the Torres, the Yankees’ No. 2 prospect (No. 21 overall) recorded his first four-hit performance with Tampa and third of the season. He finished 4-for-5 at the plate, also tallying a double, RBI and three runs scored.
Acquired from the Cubs as part of the Aroldis Chapman deal, Torres was batting .275/.359/.433 with 35 extra-base hits including nine home runs and 19 stolen bases through 94 games at Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach at the time of the trade. The 19-year-old shortstop hasn’t skipped a beat after switching organizations, as Sunday’s four-hit showing lifted his batting line to .266/.360/.413 in 28 games since being dealt.
