Du Plessis fifty consolidates South Africa’s position

Faf du Plessis became the fifth batsmen to score fifty in this innings as South Africa continued to build solidly against a largely luckless New Zealand attack. Trent Boult would be the most frustrated after he found movement, drew edges and beat the bat but went unrewarded. Tim Southee and Neil Wagner used the short ball to claim two wickets but New Zealand will face a mountain when their turn to bat comes.
South Africa took their total over 350 and still have some batting to come on what is likely to be an afternoon made for exactly that. Brilliant sunshine against cloudless skies greeted the enthusiastic Sunday crowd, which would have had some early nerves when Boult resumed his blistering new-ball spell.
