DETROIT — What began with a called third strike on James McCann became a long, antagonistic night between the Tigers and home-plate umpire Mike Everitt, who ejected designated hitter Victor Martinez, hitting coach Wally Joyner, manager Brad Ausmus and right fielder J.D. Martinez in a four-inning span of Saturday’s Tigers-Angels game at Comerica Park.
McCann was retired in the second inning on a full-count Brett Oberholtzer pitch that registered below the knees. He had reached down to take off his shin guard when Everitt called the strike, but avoided an argument. An inning later, Miguel Cabrera exchanged words with Everitt after a called third strike on the outside corner, but walked away.
