Inconsistency plagued Rory McIlroy once again Saturday at The Barclays, as he shot an even-par 71 in the third round at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York.
McIlroy’s third-round showing put him at two under overall for the tournament, and he entered the clubhouse in a tie for 23rd place. Here is a look at the current leaderboard:
The world No. 5 started the day well with three birdies in his first five holes, but his inability to avoid bogeys prevented him from gaining ground on the leaders. Here is a rundown of McIlroy’s entire third-round scorecard:
McIlroy entered the day six strokes off the pace, and early indications suggested he might put himself in contention ahead of Sunday’s fourth round.
The Northern Irishman birdied each of the first two holes to move to four-under, before a bogey on No. 3 dropped him back down to three-under.
Rory managed to get that stroke back just two holes later with a birdie on the par-four fifth, which set the stage for a potentially great round.
