Just like they did at Kingsmead, New Zealand’s bowlers responded to an unrewarding morning session by employing a nagging line after the break to South Africa’s newest opening combination, Quinton de Kock and Stephen Cook. De Kock foiled that strategy with his intent to dominate, but the bowlers then used the most trusted plan of their African journey, a barrage of short balls, to stall South Africa during the middle session. The hosts managed 82 in 26 overs to move to 182 for 2 at the tea break on the opening day in Centurion.
South Africa’s promising platform was laid by de Kock and Cook, who reversed the side’s top-order woes with a 133-run stand, their best opening partnership since 2014. But, de Kock couldn’t help compulsively pulling Neil Wagner to fine leg despite New Zealand’s apparent plan, which brought the visitors back into contention.
