South Africa’s newest opening combination, Quinton de Kock and Stephen Cook, reversed the side’s top-order woes with an unbeaten 100-run stand – their best opening partnership since 2014 – on the opening day in Centurion.
The batsmen thrived after weathering a testing opening spell from Tim Southee and Trent Boult, both of whom hit the exemplary lengths that had reaped rewards in Durban. The differences, though, were stark.
