Bautista activated from DL, leading off for Toronto

TORONTO — Jose Bautista made his return to the Blue Jays’ starting lineup on Thursday night after missing the previous 15 days with a twisted left knee.

Bautista was activated from the DL prior to Thursday night’s game against the Angels, while infielder Ryan Goins was optioned to the Minor Leagues to make room on the 25-man roster.

The 35-year-old Bautista got the start at designated hitter and hit in the leadoff spot in his first game since Aug. 9. He will either remain in the top spot of the batting order or move down to No. 2 when Devon Travis returns later this week from a sore right knuckle.

“He is a feared hitter in this league,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. “Everybody knows where he’s at in the lineup, when he’s coming up, when he’s on deck — everybody is aware of that. He can burn you. He can burn you with the best of them. He’ll take his walks. He has great discipline, so he can get on base for the other guys. He’s a weapon.”
