Chen throws off mound in pain-free session

MIAMI — For the first time since going on the disabled list, Marlins left-hander Wei-Yin Chen threw off the mound. Before batting practice on Wednesday, the 31-year-old was pain free during his 20-pitch session, in which he threw all fastballs.
Marlins manager Don Mattingly watched Chen, and repeated that the best-case scenario is the veteran pitcher returning in mid-September.
Chen has been on the DL since July 25 with a left elbow sprain.
“Today went very well,” Mattingly said. “I stood out there with him, and the ball was coming out of his hand [well]. He looked confident throwing. He was letting it go. Obviously, we’ll see how he feels tomorrow, coming out of that.”
