Hendrick Motorsports’ surprise signing of William Byron to an XFINITY Series deal through JR Motorsports sent a clear message to the NASCAR world.

The sport’s version of the New York Yankees was following the same game plan as its Major League Baseball counterpart.

For years, baseball’s Yankees built championship team after team simply by going out and signing the top free agents. Money be damned, especially during the days of flamboyant team owner George Steinbrenner, the best players in the game migrated to the Bronx.

NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick has a similar business plan. When you’re the gold standard, there’s no need to worry about finding talent. When Hendrick found himself in position to fill an open seat at his powerhouse organization, he went out and got the best he could find – Mark Martin, Kasey Kahne and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are just three of the names Hendrick has landed in recent years.
