Buchholz fans 9 as Sox stay in first place

ST. PETERSBURG — Clay Buchholz might just be a place-holder getting a spot start. But on Tuesday, he looked as capable as anyone, leading the Red Sox to a 2-1 win over the Rays at Tropicana Field.
The right-hander fanned nine, scattered five hits and allowed just one run over 6 1/3 stellar innings.
Chris Archer started for the Rays and wasn’t nearly as efficient. He needed 109 pitches to get through five laborious innings. Archer threw first-pitch strikes to just 8 of 21 batters, but he allowed just one earned run.
Craig Kimbrel pitched a scoreless ninth to register his 23rd save. The win kept Boston tied atop the American League East with the Blue Jays, who defeated the Angels on Tuesday.
