CAS Upholds Blanket Ban On Russia As Paralympic Ruling Highlights IOC Weakness

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has rejected Russia’s appeal against a ban from the Paralympic Games as punishment for confirmation of state involvement in doping.
CAS announced its ‘urgent verdict’ today, the decision to throw out Russian Paralympic Committee’s appeal against exclusion from the Paralympics, September 7-18 in Rio de Janeiro, highlighting the weakness of the International Olympic Committee’s decision to shy away from a blanket ban on Russia.
The IOC took its decision largely on the basis that any blanket ban would be rejected on legal grounds because of the “natural justice of individuals”. CAS today has shown how a blanket ban was perfectly possible in law.
