- Updated: August 22, 2016
Monday evening proved to be a fruitful one for La Liga’s underdogs after Las Palmas ensured Valencia’s 2016-17 season got off to a rough start following their 4-2 triumph at the Mestalla.
Santi Mina put Los Che into an early lead with the first of his two strikes, but Las Palmas fired back with contributions from Jonathan Viera, Kevin-Prince Boateng and two goals from Marko Livaja.
Elsewhere, newly promoted Leganes earned a shock victory in their maiden La Liga outing after beating Celta Vigo 1-0 to start their first top-flight campaign in bright fashion.
Barcelona and Real Madrid each got off to winning starts in Week 1 of the new season, with Luis Suarez netting a hat-trick in the former’s 6-2 drubbing of Real Betis, while Los Blancos notched a 3-0 victory at Real Sociedad.
Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, were held to a 1-1 home draw by top-flight newcomers Alaves, as were Villarreal, who surrendered a one-goal lead to share the spoils in their season opener at Granada on Saturday.
