Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted a move for Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is unlikely.
The German has been marginalised at Old Trafford by new Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho, meaning an exit before the closure of the transfer window looks inevitable. When asked about potentially swooping for a big-name player like Schweinsteiger, Rodgers suggested he may not be the right fit for Celtic, per Alison McConnell of the Evening Times (h/t Liam Prenderville of the Mirror):
I can get you a marquee signing but they’ve got to be able to press and they’ve got to be able to run. … I think we have brought in some really top talents who have come in and excited the supporters.
For me it’s never been about the name. But of course if the name is big and he can play, then great, but for me it’s about having the right profile of player who can come in. No matter the age they have to be hungry in every single game and every training session and that’s what I always look for.
As noted by Prenderville, Schweinsteiger has been training with the Red Devils reserves since Mourinho took over, prompting links with the Glasgow club, Major League Soccer sides and a return to the Bundesliga.
