SAN FRANCISCO — Jeff Samardzija toyed with a no-hitter for six innings Sunday night. But the Mets made sure the right-hander would pay for his mistakes in the seventh as Yoenis Cespedes smashed a two-run home run to left field as part of a 2-0 Mets win at AT&T Park.
Despite cruising through the first six innings, Samardzija took the mound in the seventh in a scoreless tie because Noah Syndergaard was proving to be equally impressive. And things unraveled for Samardzija quickly. Curtis Granderson led off the seventh with a double to left field, before Cespedes, who has three homers in his last two games, crushed a 1-0 pitch 417 feet, according to Statcast™.
That created a perfect cushion for Syndergaard, who continued to seamlessly dispatch Giants batters while giving the Mets eight shutout innings.
