Rookie talent on display in rout of D-backs

SAN DIEGO — The way Luis Perdomo was dealing Sunday afternoon at Petco Park, the rookie right-hander didn’t need much run support.

The Padres’ bats gave it to him anyway.

Perdomo allowed just an unearned run and five hits over seven impressive frames, leading the Padres to a 9-1 victory over the D-backs in the series finale. A Rule 5 selection during the offseason, Perdomo continues to cement his status as a piece of the Padres’ rotation in 2017 and beyond.

Offensively, San Diego’s rookie outfielders stole the show. Travis Jankowski and Alex Dickerson each went deep, while Patrick Kivlehan finished 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, runs and RBIs.

For the D-backs, Brandon Drury was the lone offensive bright spot, going 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the seventh inning. Right-hander Braden Shipley was roughed up for seven runs over 5 1/3 — his second consecutive poor outing after three straight quality starts.
