Farrell marvels at Papi’s durability, reliability

DETROIT — It is about this time of year when Major Leaguers really start to feel the wear and tear of a 162-game season. Especially for a 40-year-old like Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz.

Ortiz was pulled in the eighth inning of Boston’s 10-2 win over the Tigers on Friday, just as a bit of caution as well as to provide an extra at-bat for Travis Shaw. In his final season, Ortiz seems to have found the fountain of youth. He is arguably having his best season since 2007, when he hit a career-best .332 with 35 HRs and 117 RBIs. He entered Saturday’s game hitting .316 with 28 homers and 95 RBIs.

Ortiz has mostly been an everyday player, and manager John Farrell has been pleasantly surprised by Ortiz’s durability.
