Twins call up Mejia, option Vargas

KANSAS CITY — After Friday’s marathon of a game, which went 11 innings and featured a rain delay of more than three hours, the Twins needed another arm in their bullpen, so they called up left-hander Adalberto Mejia from Triple-A Rochester on Saturday. First baseman/designated hitter Kennys Vargas was optioned to Triple-A.
Mejia, who was acquired in the July 28 trade that sent Eduardo Nunez to the Giants, posted a 4.66 ERA with 20 strikeouts and three walks in 19 1/3 innings in three starts with Triple-A Rochester since the deal. He was due to start for the Red Wings on Saturday but will head to the bullpen to serve as a long reliever with Ryan Pressly, Pat Dean and Michael Tonkin unavailable.
“We need some length to protect us because we’re depleted,” manager Paul Molitor said. “He can strike people out. But he’s had some command issues at times. He’s a big guy. He has a presence on the mound from what I’ve heard. His starts down in Rochester, of the three, they said his first was the best, second one not as good and the third one got him back on track.”
