Out on Gomez, Marlins still in on Frenchy, others

PITTSBURGH — Before Carlos Gomez agreed to a Minor League deal with the Rangers on Saturday, the Marlins had interest in the veteran outfielder, who cleared waivers earlier in the afternoon.
Miami continues to explore other options, and Braves outfielder Jeff Francoeur could be a possibility in a waiver deal prior to the Aug. 31 waiver Trade Deadline.
The Marlins are seeking corner outfield depth, and Francoeur would be a right-handed-hitting option to share time with Ichiro Suzuki, who has been serving as the starting right fielder with Giancarlo Stanton out for potentially the rest of the year.
In seeking depth in any position, the organization is mindful of not disrupting clubhouse chemistry. Francoeur is highly respected and would be a popular addition in the eyes of a number of Miami players.
The question would be the cost to acquire the veteran. Miami doesn’t want to part with Class A Advanced Jupiter right-hander Luis Castillo for a player who would be with the organization …
