Schimpf’s 10th-inning walk-off caps big night

SAN DIEGO — Ryan Schimpf capped a brilliant night with a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 10th inning Friday night, propelling the Padres to a 7-4 victory over the D-backs.
Schimpf, who also tied the game in the eighth with a two-run shot, finished the night with 12 total bases and went 4-for-5.
D-backs starter Zack Greinke was sharp in his bounceback effort from a woeful start in Boston last week. He allowed two runs over seven frames, before he was removed for pinch-hitter Rickie Weeks Jr. in the eighth. Weeks promptly lined a one-out double, setting the stage for Jean Segura’s two-run single to put Arizona ahead by two. Schimpf quickly negated that in the bottom of the frame.
Padres starter Jarred Cosart allowed one run on eight hits, while striking out seven. He was sharp for the second consecutive outing, following a pair of shaky starts to begin his tenure with his new club.
MOMENTS THAT MATTEREDJean is a hitting machine: Segura entered the game as the National League leader in hits and he padded that total with his first five-hit game of the season. None was bigger than the two-run single in the eighth. Segura also was in the middle of the D-backs’ scoring in the seventh, when he stole third and scored on catcher Derek Norris’ wild throw.
