It was quarterfinal Friday at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, as just eight men and eight women remained in each of the singles brackets.

The quarterfinals on both sides featured some players who recently made it back from the biggest sporting event in the world.
Fresh off her silver-medal performance at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Angelique Kerber returned to the WTA Tour in strong fashion, defeating Carla Suarez Navarro to make it to the semifinals.
With a lot of tennis and traveling under her belt, Kerber started out slow, dropping the first set, but she hit another gear in the second and third sets to close out a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 win.
