Dodgers opt for ‘conservative approach’ with Kershaw

CINCINNATI — A jovial Clayton Kershaw walked into the Dodgers’ locker room on Friday. Having been on the disabled list since July 1, the opportunities to join his team on the road have been few.
“It’s fun to be on the road with the guys,” Kershaw said. “It’s no fun sitting and watching. Even though I can’t play yet, I like being here, I like being with the guys, I like being on the road.”
Kershaw traveled with the team because he’ll be throwing a bullpen on Saturday, his first time on the mound since his rehab setback in mid-July as he attempted to return quickly from his herniated disc.
This time, the Dodgers have taken things a lot slower, but remain “cautiously optimistic” that Kershaw’s problems are behind him.
“I gave it a shot the first time being we were all pretty aggressive with the whole thing,” Kershaw said. “I didn’t really have any signs that it was going to backfire, but it did, and so now we go with the conservative approach. Still no fun to sit here, but having different steps, getting to go on the road, get to throw bullpens kind of keeps you more optimistic.”
