What to expect from Rockies’ Hoffman in big leagues

Though the Rockies have had difficulty developing pitchers in their two-plus decades of existence, Jon Gray and Tyler Anderson have provided hope with the way they’ve performed as rookies this season. Now another arm who’s expected to be a big part of Colorado’s future is on his way to Coors Field.
The Rockies are expected to promote No. 3 prospect Jeff Hoffman from Triple-A to start against the Cubs on Saturday. Ranked No. 41 on MLBPipeline.com’s Top 100 Prospects list, he becomes the latest addition to Colorado’s 2016 bumper crop of rookies that also includes Anderson, David Dahl, Carlos Estevez, Gray, Trevor Story and Tony Wolters.
Undrafted out of a New York high school in 2011, Hoffman began to blossom at the Connie Mack World Series that August, and he emerged as a first-round talent in the Cape Cod League the following summer. He starred at East Carolina and became a legitimate candidate to go No. 1 overall in the 2014 Draft, before his elbow gave out and required Tommy John surgery that May.
