Thommo: Reds must defend better

Anfield legend Phil Thompson insists Liverpool still need to tighten up at the back before being considered title contenders despite their impressive opening win at Arsenal.

After levelling just before the break, the Reds produced an emphatic 13 minutes as they scored three times to go 4-1 ahead, but nearly let their lead slip as Arsenal battled back to 4-3.

The visitors eventually held on but did little to silence suggestions they are too defensively vulnerable to maintain a title charge, having conceded 50 times last season.

Jurgen Klopp was forced to defend his left-back Alberto Moreno after the Spaniard was at fault for giving away a penalty and being out of position for Theo Walott’s opener, with Gary Neville labeling him “absolute garbage”.
