Kingsmead probably did not like being woken up so early by South Africa. But after a tantrum in the form of a wet outfield, which delayed the start of play by half an hour, the toss came down in favour of the home team and they chose to bat. That they did so under overcast skies meant New Zealand weren’t too unhappy. They have two of the best swing bowlers in the world in Tim Southee and Trent Boult, with seam-bowling back up provided by Neil Wagner and Doug Bracewell.

There were uncertainties over the behaviour of the pitch in Durban, which has never hosted a first-class match this early in the year. It had looked fairly dry on the eve of the match though. South Africa’s top order would pin their hopes on that, and can look into personal form as well.
