Mets skip Matz’s start due to shoulder discomfort

SAN FRANCISCO — Shortly after pitching 7 1/3 shutdown innings against the Padres, Steven Matz felt a “little twinge” while throwing on a flat surface. The next day, Matz continued to feel it.
The left-hander was still feeling discomfort when the Mets arrived in San Francisco, and manager Terry Collins announced after a 10-7 series-opening loss to the Giants on Thursday night that the team would skip Matz’s spot in the rotation Friday.
Seth Lugo, who has a 2.65 ERA in nine relief appearances this season, will start in Matz’s absence.
