SAN FRANCISCO — Madison Bumgarner’s fourth-inning home run was merely part of a wild offensive affair Thursday night as the Giants outlasted the Mets, 10-7.
Pristine pitching evolved into a sudden slugfest in the fourth, when New York’s Justin Ruggiano clobbered a grand slam off Bumgarner to shatter a scoreless tie. Bumgarner responded with his two-run homer off Jacob deGrom that capped San Francisco’s five-run fourth. It was Bumgarner’s third homer of the season and 14th of his career, which leads all active pitchers.
deGrom (7-6) was tagged for a career-high eight runs on a career-high 13 hits over his five innings pitched, while Bumgarner improved to 12-7 with five innings pitched, allowing six hits and four runs.
Joe Panik’s two-run double helped the Giants add three fifth-inning runs, which proved essential when the Mets rallied for a trio of runs in the seventh.
