Kershaw set to throw off mound Saturday

PHILADELPHIA — Clayton Kershaw will join the Dodgers in Cincinnati and make the next step in his recovery on Saturday.

Kershaw, who is on the 60-day disabled list with a herniated disk and hasn’t pitched since June 26, has been throwing off flat ground for more than a week. On Saturday, he will throw a light bullpen session — his first time pitching on a mound since landing on the DL.

First, Kershaw played long toss. Then, he worked in his repertoire of pitches off flat ground. And now, he’s moving to a mound. If Kershaw’s bullpen goes well, he’ll ramp up the next one and possibly move to a rehab assignment — if he’s ready before the Minor League season ends at the start of September.

“Our expectation is that he would go out there and face hitters,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “As we look at the calendar, we feel that there’s time for Clayton to make a couple, two, three starts before the end of the season”
