Girardi hints Sanchez may be primary catcher

NEW YORK — It’s still unclear, but the Yankees may have a new primary catcher.
After seeing rookie catcher Gary Sanchez hit three home runs in a three-game span, manager Joe Girardi bumped the youngster up into the cleanup spot for Wednesday’s game and insinuated that Sanchez is primed to get a majority of the starts behind the plate moving forward.
“We’re going to still see [Brian McCann] DHing,” Girardi said. “I’m going to catch Sanchez.”
That said, when asked point blank whether that meant Sanchez will take over for McCann full time, Girardi backtracked a bit and redefined his comments.
“I’m not ready to put that on [Sanchez] yet,” Girardi continued. “As I said, they’re all going to catch. It’s a day-by-day thing here. That’s what we’ve been doing for a long time, and we’ll see how it goes.”
