Bristol Motor Speedway remains one of the most iconic tracks on the NASCAR calendar.
The annual summer night race has been a staple on the Sprint Cup Series schedule for decades. It morphed into one of the sport’s biggest events sometime in the 1990s during NASCAR’s meteoric rise in popularity. The track’s expansion to the 160,000-plus coliseum it is today helped turn Bristol into one of the most unique, recognizable venues in all of sports.
Over the years, the track has produced its share of memorable moments and races including these five:
Gordon vs. Kenseth The spring race of 2006 created an image many thought they’d never see when Jeff Gordon and Matt Kenseth got into a scuffle that started on the track and ended on pit road. They made contact battling for third place in the closing laps of the 500-lap race and when they got to pit road, fireworks exploded. Kenseth went to discuss the situation with Gordon, who didn’t wait for words and applied a two-handed shove to his chest (while still wearing his helmet, by the way).
