Gray thinks he’s solved slider troubles

DENVER — Rockies right-hander Jon Gray believes he has found an answer to the problems with his slider that led to a two-start slump. He’ll try to put his answers in action Wednesday afternoon against the Nationals.
After holding opponents to two runs and striking out 25 in 26 1/3 innings over four starts, Gray coughed up eight runs and 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings in a home loss to the Marlins, and seven runs (six earned) in 4 1/3 innings at Philadelphia.
Gray has a fastball that can zoom above 95 mph, but the slider has been the “out” pitch for 81 of his 129 strikeouts, according to Statcast™ data. So he was doomed without it the last two starts.
