Holliday to have surgery; Cards place Maness on DL

HOUSTON — Seth Maness, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list ahead of the Cardinals’ series opener in Houston on Tuesday, will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery on Thursday. Outfielder Matt Holliday will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair a fractured right thumb.
It was not immediately known whether Holliday’s surgery will end his season. The procedure will be handled by Dr. Charles Goldfarb, who examined Holliday’s thumb on Monday.
The rash of injuries has been relentless for the Cardinals, who have placed a dozen players on the DL since the start of July. In the last week, the Cards have lost Michael Wacha (right shoulder inflammation), Matt Adams (right shoulder inflammation), Holliday and Maness.
Right-hander Sam Tuivailala was recalled from Triple-A Memphis to take Maness’ spot on the active roster ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Astros. Tuivailala made …
