Blackmon stays hot after Player of Week nod

DENVER — Rockies center fielder Charlie Blackmon has been named the National League Player of the Week for the second time this season and fourth of his career.
Blackmon belted five homers over the weekend in Philadelphia, setting the Rockies’ record for most deep flies in a three-game series. For the week, he went 18-for-32 (.563) with a 1.913 OPS, thanks in large part to his seven homers and three doubles, plus nine RBIs. He struck out just four times in that stretch.
On the season, Blackmon has already set a career high with 21 homers — including a solo shot in Monday’s 5-4 loss to the Nationals — and he’s just 12 RBIs shy of his personal benchmark of 72.
“He’s just in the zone,” manager Walt Weiss said after Monday’s game. “He’s not missing pitches he gets to hit. He’s barreling them up and he’s barreling them up hard. And they’re carrying over the fence.”
Blackmon’s homer on Monday, coming on a 1-2 changeup from Max Scherzer, was launched a Statcast-projected 387 feet away at an exit velocity of 100 mph with a 33-degree launch angle. Statistically, it wasn’t a marvel, but the reaction of the 27,818 fans at Coors Field proved it was a no-doubter.
