Lefty Reed optioned, outfielder Waldrop recalled

CINCINNATI — Following mostly struggles during his first Major League experience with the Reds — including a particularly poor start Sunday, pitcher Cody Reed was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Monday. Outfielder Kyle Waldrop was recalled from Louisville to take Reed’s spot on the 25-man roster.
Reed, 23, is 0-7 with a 7.36 ERA in 10 starts for Cincinnati with 67 hits, 19 walks and 12 homers allowed in 47 2/3 innings. During Sunday’s 7-3 loss to the Brewers, the left-hander gave up six earned runs with five hits and three walks and did not record an out in the second inning.
Overall, Reed struggled to effectively command his fastball and slider with any consistency. As the losses initially accumulated, manager Bryan Price had maintained that Reed needed to learn at the big league level, but that was no longer doable.
“There’s definitely some work to do with the delivery,” Price said. “In Triple-A, you can take some chances and you can utilize a game as a vehicle to work on something. Here it really is you play to win every single moment.”
In all likelihood, Reed will return when rosters can expand in September. If he is brought back …
