Demetri Mitchell scored three minutes from time to give Manchester United a 1-0 win over Leicester City at the Leigh Sports Village Stadium in the Barclays Premier League 2 U23 Division One on Monday.
The substitute’s late strike undid a Foxes team whose greater experience had proved too savvy and stubborn for a United squad that was littered with academy prospects who were hoping to come to the attention of senior boss Jose Mourinho.
Yet, while United stuttered in front of goal, neighbours Manchester City scored three times to wipe out a two-goal deficit and stun Derby County.
Elsewhere, Aston Villa lost at home after a late goal from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The day’s other early fixture saw Newcastle United hit three away to Norwich City.
